Shakes are a great way to get a good dose of protein and nutrients in the morning. In the IMG_7317winter they can sometimes feel too cold and damage the digestive fire. We solve this problem but adding a healthy amount of warming spices to aid in digestion. Great for your health and delicious too.

1 cup brewed Rooibos tea

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon nutmeg

1 in piece of fresh ginger peeled and grated

½ cup almond milk

1 tablespoon raw organic honey

2 tablespoons sunflower butter

1 scoop Medclear powder by Thorne or protein powder of your choice

Blend and enjoy.

It’s that time of year again when our thoughts turn to with new resolve towards our IMG_7315health. Many will opt for diet and lifestyle changes, some of which are too harsh for this time of the year. Juice cleanses, smoothies, and fasting can injury the digestive functions if done incorrectly. We solve this problem with the following 10 steps.

 

1.) Work to consciously warm your body by taking warm baths, or try our infrared sauna to ramp up your detox game.

2.) Bundle up! Wear warm clothes that cover your neck both inside and out. East Asian tradition holds that colds and flu are more likely is the back of the neck is vulnerable to wind and cold. -Make sure to keep your feet warm as well.

3.) Cook with warming spices like ginger, turmeric, and cinnamon. Great for circulation and to revitalize the body they are also antiviral.

Nourishing Fish Soup

Nourishing Fish Soup

Herbs and foods may be taken to nourish the Qi and Blood, support uterine health and help women regain health and vitality. Below is a simple soup that is commonly given to women in China after childbirth but can be eaten anytime as a nourishing tonic. Eat 1 cup daily for 1 month.

2 large white fish fillet, (cod, sole, flounder, snapper etc)

Fish soup veggies

6 cups fish stock, see recipe below (use less if you add coconut milk)

2 cans full fat coconut milk

4T white miso paste (optional)

4 green onions chopped

4 carrots sliced

3 baby bok choy chopped into 1/2 pieces

Fresh Ginger root- (good quality should be firm) 5 slices (remove before eating,) browned on both sides

Chinese rice wine 1 cup (can substitute any white wine you like)

4 T toasted sesame oil

Salt to taste

Optional Soup Herbs Available at our Clinic: Shan Yao (Chinese Yam root) 30 g, Huang Qi (Astragalus) 30 g, Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Berries) 10 g, Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica) 10 g (boil in broth for 20 min, remove before eating.) These can also just be taken as a tea and not added to soup. They will have a strong herby taste.

Saute ginger and carrots until ginger is brown. Heat broth (pick one from below) until boiling and then reduce to a simmer. Add coconut milk, rice wine (if you are using) and fish. Cook for 5 min. Add bok choy and miso (if you are using). Stir until miso is dissolved. Shut heat off and cover for 2 min. Add salt and sesame oil and serve.

Fish Stock

6 quarts of filtered water
1 lb of fish heads and bones (fish heads alone will suffice)*
1/8 cup raw, organic apple cider vinegar
Himalayan or Celtic sea salt to taste

*Do not use oily fish such as salmon for fish stock or you will stink up the whole house!   Only use non-oily fish such as sole, turbot, rockfish or snapper.

 

Quick and Easy Fish Stock with Bonito Flakes- though low in protein this broth is high in selenium and B vitamins.

Bring 6 cups of filtered water to a boil.

Remove pan from heat and add 1 cup bonito flakes

Cover and allow the bonito flakes to sink to the bottom of the pot.  This will take a few minutes.

Strain out the bonito flakes and discard.

Add 4 TBL of miso paste (omit if adding to Replenishing Fish Soup)

The broth has a smoky, hearty flavor similar to that of beef stock.

Drink bonito broth by itself, mix with miso or use as a base for seafood gumbo, clam chowder or other similar soups.

You can find the dried flakes at health food stores, Asian groceries, and online.

Simmer on low for 20 min.

Seasonal allergies are a very common complaint for people to have especially in an area such as fall allergies Seattle WAthe Pacific Northwest.

Year in and year out allergy patients dread this season. The symptoms of seasonal allergies can be severe and can cause suffering for a large portion of the population. The pharmaceutical companies capitalize on it. From inhalers over shots to pills, millions of dollars are spent annually to combat the runny noses, sneezing, and itchy eyes.

We can draw some interesting parallel between Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine. In the traditional medicine we treat allergies by balancing the Stomach, Spleen, Lung as well as large intestine Meridians. Each have their correlated symptoms. All the organs mentioned have meridians that run or flow through the areas where symptoms bother us most – the upper respiratory tract and face.

Western medicine explains allergies as a hypersensitive reaction to airborne particles such as pollen, dust or other environmental factors. Antibodies produced by lymphocytes react to the pollen or airborne allergens and cause the most bothersome reaction.  Overall allergies are a very complex topic. Each person etiology or reason for having allergies is different. It can be genetic, exposure, autoimmune and once one allergy is present more might develop.

The following is a list of medication classes that can be obtained. Antihistamines, Corticosteroids, Mast Cell Stabilizers, Leukotriene Inhibitors, Nasal Anticholinergics, Decongestants, Immunomodulators and Autoinjectible Epinephrine.

Many more over the counter drugs are available. All of the above have side effects that you should make yourself aware of. Most will have dependency effects. The body also adapts and builds a tolerance to most of these drugs.

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine will look not only at the symptoms you are experiencing, but more so will take in consideration your stress levels, overall health, diet and potential underlying causes for your suffering. As mentioned earlier we work on meridians and prescribe herbs to help your body to move from one extreme back to a centered balance. Acupuncture has been shown to have anti inflammatory effects which can help your breathing and watery eyes. Herbs can be utilized to help with nasal discharge, itching eyes and sneezing. Once the we have diagnosed the underlying cause we are able to treat it and your body will regain strength to fight off allergens on its own.

Furthermore we are able to review your daily diet habits and guide you away from foods that aggravate your symptoms. Together we can develop a plan and based on the improvement levels after a few treatments assess what your body needs.

lemon detoxEast Asian medicine says one should eat according to their constitution and nature of foods. Our top 10 foods for detoxification are balanced between those that warm and cool. When eaten together they will benefit most body types. I love adding these to a cleansing diet simply based on their wonderful flavors. Not surprisingly, scientific evidence is mounting to support their benefit as well.

In East Asian medicine there is a strong tradition of eating a wide variety of colorful foods that are right for one’s own constitution. Everyone’s body is different and this should be taken into account when choosing the types of foods that are right for you. For instance if you are a cool type  you might prefer warm drinks, need lots of sleep, and put on weight easily. Your body will respond well to warming and damp transforming foods to stimulate your body to function better. Note- In the winter season foods are best taken lightly cooked to avoid injury to the digestion for all constitutions.  Confused about which foods are right for your constitution? Ask your acupuncturist!

Foods for detox-What’s cool

1.) Beets Long known to support the liver in purifying blood, beets are a powerhouse for detoxification. A great source of folate and betaine, beets lower overall inflammation in the body. They are also great for regulating menstruation and menopause. Beets are cool and sweet in nature and nourish the blood.

2.) Artichokes These yummy guys are high in fiber and contain cynarin and silymarin which promote liver and gall bladder function. They are also high in the antioxidant vitamin c and folic acid. Folic acid is especially important in women who are trying to conceive as it reduces neural tube defects in babies. They nourish the yin and cool to offset warming herbs and hot constitutions.

3.) Carrots A simple shredded carrot salad with olive oil and a touch of salt is a mini liver detox when eaten daily. Carrots are high in fiber which binds toxins to help them be eliminated. Their nature is cooling. They clear heat, detoxify, strengthen all

organs, nourish the eyes, and moisten the intestines.

4.) Blueberries  A power packed fruit with a low glycemic index that won’t spike your blood sugar. These little guys give you a dose of anthocyanins which are antioxidants to help your body eliminate toxins. They are a great source of vitamins C and E as well as manganese and fiber.  Blueberries are cool in nature and nourish the yin energy. As always be careful in eating too many raw fruits and veggies as they can be damaging to the digestion.

5.) Broccoli Cools and clears heat, aids resolving water retention. From a Western perspective it is high in Calcium and also vitamin C which aids in Calcium absorption. It is high in vitamins A, K, E and folate. It is a good source of trace minerals like manganese, phosphorus, B 6. Broccolli can aid the liver in Phase I and II liver detoxification. It is high in di-indolylmethane (DIM) which stimulates your body to metabolize estradiol more efficiently.

6.) Seaweed This cold in nature sea vegetable is a powerhouse. Seaweed is useful in promoting thyroid function and is loaded with nutrients. It’s high mineral content and plenty of chlorophyll make it a super detoxifier which supports the liver. Because of its cold nature it is great paired with something warming like ginger or garlic. This will balance its effects.

7.)Lemon Cooling and nourishing to the digestion. Adding lemon juice with a little salt and olive oil can brighten up many simple dished like cooked greens or steamed beets. Beneficial bioflavonoids, citric acid and a bright delicious flavor explain why lemons top our list. Lemon has also antibacterial effects and aids in production of bile for fat digestion. High in antioxidants like vitamin C, it is effective in treating inflammatory conditions.

You’ll notice this list is a little shorter. In our Western culture most of us have an excess of heat. Most cleaning diets aid in clearing heat. These warming foods are used as a balance to the cooling foods. These foods will heat up any cleansing diet!

7.)Garlic (hot) and Onion (Warm) Garlic and onions have similar health and anti-inflammatory properties. They act on the heart and liver assisting phase two liver detoxification. Their active ingredients are gluthathione, quercetin and allicin. They are also high in vitamin C. They are anti-viral and anti-fungal. The heating nature of garlic and can offset some of the cooling properties of other foods used in detoxification like dark greens and seaweed. Don’t overdo it especially is you are a person with a hot constitution (red face, likes cold weather and cold drinks, possible night sweats.)

9.) Fresh Ginger Fresh ginger is hot in nature.  In Chinese medicine it is thought to aid the immune system, warm and regulate the digestion and reduce the toxicity of other herbs. Fresh ginger aids in your detox by stimulating digestion, circulation and sweating. A natural anti-inflammatory, studies have shown ginger to be more effective than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

10.) Parsley This bright herb is slightly warming. It promotes digestion, regulates and moves the body’s Qi or vital energy. It’s high in vitamin C, vitamin K, beta-carotene and folate.  It balances blood sugar and boosts glutathione which is a powerful antioxidant. a great addition to salads and soups.
